Gambling should cost only what you have set aside for fun. If it has started to cost more, in money, time, sleep or relationships, free and confidential help is available across the UK, and you can block gambling sites in a few minutes. Everything on this page is free, and you must be 18 or over to gamble in Great Britain.

Talk to someone today

  • National Gambling Helpline: call 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, or 0808 2819 265 in Wales. It is run by GamCare and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. GamCare also offers live chat on its website.
  • NHS gambling clinics: specialist NHS services in England treat gambling harm, and you can refer yourself.
  • Gamblers Anonymous: peer support meetings, in person and online, at gamblersanonymous.org.uk.
  • Gambling Therapy: free online support in several languages at gamblingtherapy.org, useful if you live outside the UK.

Block gambling where you spend

Blocking works best in layers, because each tool covers a different gap.

Tool What it blocks Cost
GAMSTOP Your accounts at every online gambling business licensed in Great Britain, for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years Free
Bank gambling block Card payments to gambling merchants, set in most UK banking apps Free
Gamban Gambling websites and apps on your devices, including many unlicensed ones Free through the TalkBanStop campaign
Venue self-exclusion Betting shops, bingo halls, arcades and casinos near you Free

Five steps you can take this week

  1. Register with GAMSTOP online. It takes a few minutes and applies to every licensed online operator in Great Britain.
  2. Switch on the gambling block in your banking app, and ask whether your bank can also restrict crypto purchases.
  3. Install blocking software on your phone and computer, so offshore sites are covered too.
  4. Tell one person you trust what you are doing. Support from someone close makes the blocks easier to keep.
  5. Call the helpline or book a chat session, even if you think your situation is not serious enough.

Money worries and debt

Gambling debts can feel impossible to talk about, but free, regulated debt advice is available. StepChange and National Debtline both give confidential help with budgets, repayment plans and dealing with lenders, at no cost. Avoid paid “debt solution” firms that cold-call or advertise heavily, and never borrow to cover gambling losses. If you share finances with someone, a debt adviser can also explain how to protect joint accounts while you get back on track.

A warning about crypto and offshore sites

None of the tools above is complete on its own, and crypto exposes the gaps. Offshore crypto casinos are not part of GAMSTOP, and some advertise “not on GAMSTOP” as a selling point. A bank block stops payments to gambling merchants, but buying crypto from an exchange is not a gambling payment, so coins bought that way can still reach an unlicensed site. If you have self-excluded, consider also asking your bank to block crypto purchases where it offers that option, and install device-level blocking.

Licensed sites in Great Britain must also give you deposit limits, time-out options and reality checks. Using them early, before a problem grows, is the simplest protection of all.

Signs it may be time to stop

  • You bet more than you planned, or chase losses to win them back.
  • Money meant for bills, rent or food goes on gambling.
  • You hide gambling from family or borrow to keep going.
  • You feel anxious, low or irritable when you cannot gamble.

Any one of these is a good reason to call the helpline. You do not need to be in crisis to ask for help.

If someone close to you gambles

Family members and friends can use the same helpline and GamCare chat for their own support. GamAnon, the sister fellowship of Gamblers Anonymous, runs meetings for people affected by someone else’s gambling.
